GLOOP AND FORMS WORKSHOP
with JIHYUN KIM
£380 (MEMBERS £340)
Sunday 8th and Sunday 15th November
(2:00 - 6:00pm)
Join ceramic artist Jihyun Kim for an immersive two-day pottery workshop exploring the creative potential of Gloop glaze. Designed for makers with some handbuilding experience, this workshop combines sculpture, surface design, and material experimentation to push the boundaries of glazing.
Throughout the masterclass, you'll explore a range of techniques for working with Gloop glaze, from understanding how it behaves on different forms to using it as a creative tool for texture, movement, and surface expression. You'll create both a three-dimensional sculptural piece and a flat ceramic tile, giving you the opportunity to experiment with a variety of glaze applications and effects.
As a special highlight of the workshop, participants will receive a Gloop glaze recipe to take away, giving you the opportunity to continue experimenting with this unique glaze approach and further develop your own surface decoration practice beyond the workshop.
Between the two sessions, all work will be bisque fired and prepared for glazing and decoration on the second day.
Day 1 – Handbuilding & Design (4 hours)
-
Artist talk and introduction
-
Overview of the workshop and Q&A
-
Introduction to Gloop glaze: its properties, creative possibilities, and demonstration of forms designed to work with the glaze
-
Sketching and planning your designs
-
Handbuilding a sculptural ceramic piece and creating a flat tile for glaze experimentation
All work created on Day 1 will be bisque fired before the second session.
Day 2 – Gloop Glaze Application (4 hours)
-
Demonstration of Gloop glaze decorating techniques
-
Hands-on application of Gloop glaze to your sculptural piece and tile
-
Individual guidance and creative experimentation
-
Group sharing and final Q&A
By the end of the workshop, participants will have gained practical knowledge of working with Gloop glaze, a collection of test pieces and finished works, and the confidence to continue exploring this distinctive glazing process in their own ceramic practice.
