Morning and Full Day Pottery Program
During our Summer Classes Children age 5 to 16 will learn to create from clay with the three basic methods of hand building: Coiling, pinching, and slab work. They will be able to make a great variety of bowls, dishes, containers and sculptural art pieces, while being guided step-by-step through all the processes from making a pot to decorating, glazing and firing it. Each week we spend one morning making fabulous jewelry from Egyptian Paste. Children age 10 and older can learn throwing pots on the potter’s wheel. All work goes through two kiln firings; the second firing will make the pottery safe for food and drink, as well as use in microwave oven and dishwasher. We use only health-approved clays and glaze-materials.
The classes are limited to 12 students for wheel-throwing; there are 4 electric wheels available. My Studio is air-conditioned and is located in Hopewell Borough. Children are grouped according to their age and previous experience with clay. We love to see returning students and are dedicated to giving them new and challenging projects! Younger kids will get a chance each morning for some unstructured, imaginary clay-time. I am very fortunate to have two wonderful and gifted High School students helping me with the summer teaching . They will also take great care of your children and supervise them during snack- and play-time in our backyard.
My name is Ursula Kaplowitz. I have been a professional potter and sculptor for 27 years, have taught children clay for 18 years and am myself the mother of three. It is my sincere wish to make my studio a peaceful space where children can relax and create! While nurturing each child’s unique individuality I love to help them make beautiful and fun pottery.
The cost for the AM pottery program is $200.00 including all materials and firing fees. Each session will take place Mondays through Fridays from 9 AM to 12 PM. Students are grouped by age and instructed according to their skill level. For selected older students with previous experience working with clay, we offer an advanced afternoon program of clay from 12:30 to 3:30 PM for $ 175.00.

Afternoon Art Program
The Clay Garden is also offering a relaxing afternoon program of arts and crafts for children and teens. Rebecca Erickson will be teaching this year’s July program. She is a certified elementary school teacher with great gifts in the arts and crafts. We are planning a wide variety of projects including masks, puppets, printmaking, sculpture, sewing by hand and on the sewing machine. Her lesson plans will be made around the age and preferences of attending students. Martha Ebert, certified Nursery School and Middle/High School Teacher will offer Arts and Crafts in August.
The fee for the afternoon program is $175.00 a week, all materials included, and runs from 1-4 PM. There is a supervised lunch hour available from 12-1 PM at a cost of $5.00 a day or $ 25.00 a week.
