Children's Classes 2007 / 2008
My name is
Ursula Kaplowitz and I have been a
professional potter and sculptor for twenty five years, have taught
children pottery for seventeen years and am myself the mother of
three. It is my sincere wish to make my studio a peaceful
space where children can relax and create! While nurturing each
child's unique individuality I love to help them make beautiful
pottery.
I invite your children and teenagers to create functional and
sculptural work while learning the three
basic methods of hand building with clay: pinching, coiling,
and slab-work. Older children and advanced students
will have a chance to learn throwing pots on the
potter's wheel!
Students are guided step-by-step through all the
processes from shaping a pot to finishing and glazing it, always,
however, being encouraged to create their own individual art-pieces.
All pottery goes through two kiln-firings: after the first firing
the students will decorate their work with under-glaze colors or a
wide variety of colored glazes. The second firing will make the
pottery safe with food and drink for everyday use. All clays and
glazes we use are health-approved!
Your young artists will come home with hand-made mugs, plates, bowls, pitchers, covered dishes, and baskets, candleholders and much more! I love to work with them toward upcoming Holidays and we use many seasonal themes, but they are always welcome to bring their own ideas and wishes to class! We also explore jewelry making with a very special self-glazing clay called Egyptian Paste.
